Embedding a YouTube Video in Powerpoint

Embedding a YouTube video into a PowerPoint presentation has recently become more difficult following the updates to both YouTube and PowerPoint.

There is a workaround for this problem, available on YouTube by clicking here, and there are step-by-step instructions below.

1. In PowerPoint enable the Developer tab:

  • click on File -> Options -> Customize Ribbon
  •  tick the box next to Developer in the right hand list
  •  click OK to close PowerPoint Options

2. On a blank slide in your presentation add a placeholder for the video:

  •  click on the Developer tab
  •  click on the hammer and spanner icon in the Controls section to open the More Controls dialog window
  •  scroll down and select Shockwave Flash Object
  •  click OK to close the More Controls dialog window
  •  click and drag on your slide to draw a rectangle where you want the video to appear
  •  when you release the mouse button you should see a rectangle with a cross in it

3. Copy the address of the web page containing the video on the YouTube web site
use your web browser to locate the video on the YouTube web site
select the full web page address and then press Ctrl-C to copy it to the clipboard

4. Paste and amend the address into the placeholder properties in PowerPoint

  • back in PowerPoint, right click on the placeholder rectangle and choose Properties
  • locate the property named Movie and click in the text box to the right
  • press Ctrl-V to paste the full YouTube address of the video into the text box
  • edit the address using this example:
  • delete "watch?"
  • replace "v=" with "v/"
  • your address should look like this:
  • close the Properties dialog window

NOTE: the rectangle will still look the same, it won't display the video until you view the slide in a Slide Show
