British Universities are a great success story. Over the last 30 years, some of the 'finest brains' in the world have pushed the boundaries of knowledge, science and understanding. At the same time, a University place has is only reserved for a small number however this has been extended to hundreds of thousands more students each year.
What makes Further Education different and valuable from Higher Education is its “tradition of service to industry, business and the professions”. It is a chance to get the training and qualifications when many have have missed out in their lives.
There is an increasing awareness of the continuing competition between the Further and Higher Education, whether that is the unprecedented changes to funding, the high demand of students, the different pathways people follow between them both, the partnership between further and higher education, and the awareness of them to young students, teachers and parents.
